Let me start by saying – wow. Piper Rayne's 'The Problem with Second Chances' absolutely wrecked me (in the best way possible). As someone who's followed Rylan and Calista's journey through previous books, finally getting their full story felt like reuniting with old friends.
The soccer field setting immediately hooked me. The way Piper Rayne writes about their athletic careers makes you feel the adrenaline of professional sports – the triumphs, the brutal injuries, and especially the frustrating gender pay gap in women's soccer (which they handle with just the right amount of realism and rage).
What surprised me most were the flashbacks. Normally I hate time jumps, but here they're woven so naturally that I found myself eagerly anticipating each memory reveal. That scene where teenage Rylan shares his protein bar with Calista after practice? My heart actually ached.
The audiobook narration deserves its own shoutout. Joe Arden and Erin Mallon somehow make you feel every ounce of their 15-year emotional baggage through tone alone. There's one particular breakup scene where you can literally hear Rylan's voice crack – I had to pause my workout because I started crying on the treadmill.
Now for some real talk – Calista's stubbornness frustrated me at times (girl, JUST GO TO THERAPY), but that's what makes her feel so real. And Rylan? That man has the patience of a saint. Their explosive chemistry during wedding planning scenes had me fanning myself, while their deeper emotional moments made me want to hug my Kindle.
The Bailey and Greene family cameos are perfection too. Even though it tackles heavy themes, there's still that signature small-town charm with meddling grandmas and hilarious retirement home antics to lighten the mood.
If you love: second chance romances that actually earn their reconciliation, sports romances with substance, or just really good kissing scenes against locker room doors – this is your next five-star read. Just clear your schedule first, because you won't want to put it down.
