Let me start by saying this: if you think you know Sherlock Holmes, think again. This 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set completely redefines the iconic detective in a way that feels both fresh and surprisingly faithful to Arthur Conan Doyle's original vision.
The first thing that struck me was how alive Victorian London feels in 4K. The cobblestone streets, the flickering gas lamps, even the grime on the buildings - it's all so vivid you can practically smell the coal smoke. I found myself pausing just to admire the set design details.
Robert Downey Jr.'s performance is a revelation. This isn't your grandfather's Sherlock - he's witty, physically capable, and has this manic energy that makes him feel genuinely brilliant rather than just intellectually superior. That bare-knuckle boxing scene? Absolutely brutal in the best possible way.
The special features are where this set really shines. The 'Maximum Movie Mode' is hands-down one of the best commentary experiences I've ever encountered. It's not just Guy Ritchie talking over the film - you get picture-in-picture behind-the-scenes footage, technical breakdowns of fight choreography, and fascinating insights into how they adapted Doyle's stories.
One personal favorite moment: discovering through the bonus features how many martial arts elements were actually drawn directly from Doyle's original descriptions of Holmes. It completely changed how I viewed those action sequences.
The inclusion of both digital copy and DVD (on one disc) turned out to be more useful than I expected. I ended up loaning the DVD to my sister who doesn't have a 4K setup, while keeping the digital version for travel viewing.
If there's one minor complaint, it's having to fast-forward through trailers at startup - but that's a tiny inconvenience compared to everything this set gets right. Whether you're a longtime Holmes fan or new to the character, this presentation will make you see Baker Street's most famous resident in an entirely new light.
