I recently tried the Ultra Mobile prepaid SIM with unlimited talk, text, and 3GB of 5G/4G LTE data. Here’s my honest take after using it for a month.
The Good: The plan is affordable at $19/month, and the coverage on T-Mobile’s network is solid in the U.S. Calls and texts worked flawlessly, and I loved the unlimited international calling to 90+ countries—perfect for staying in touch with family abroad.
The Bad: The packaging is misleading. It boldly claims 'Unlimited Data,' but fine print reveals it’s only 3GB of high-speed data. After that, speeds drop significantly. Customer service was a nightmare—slow, unhelpful, and quick to deflect issues to Amazon.
Setup Woes: Activation was clunky. The APN settings didn’t auto-configure as promised, and voicemail access required a network reset (which I avoided to keep my other SIM settings intact). Also, my caller ID showed someone else’s name—creepy and unresolved.
Travel Test: Worked well in the U.S., but performance abroad was spotty. In Mexico, data was unusable until I discovered (buried on their site) a $5 add-on for extra roaming data. Texts failed in some countries like Colombia.
Verdict: Decent for light U.S. use or short trips if you manage expectations. But if you need reliable international roaming or hate fine-print surprises, look elsewhere.
