As someone who's spent countless hours coaching youth basketball, I can confidently say Pistol Pete's Homework Basketball DVD is a solid investment for players of all ages. The vintage 80s production might make you chuckle at first (hello, cheesy background music!), but don't let that fool you - the content itself is pure gold.
The drills are surprisingly effective, especially for developing fundamental ball-handling skills. I've personally used these exercises with middle school players who initially rolled their eyes at the retro vibe, only to become completely engaged once they saw how the drills improved their coordination and control.
Where this DVD really shines is in breaking down complex moves into manageable steps. My nephew particularly loved how he could watch just 2-3 skills at a time, then immediately go practice them in the driveway. It's perfect for short attention spans!
That said, if you're only buying one instructional DVD, serious players might benefit more from Steve Nash's more modern version. While Pete's techniques are timeless, Nash's production offers clearer demonstrations and contemporary training methods.
The real test came when I tried these drills myself (yes, a 30-something coach embarrassing himself in the gym). The footwork patterns and ball control exercises absolutely hold up decades later - though my knees might disagree after some of those pivots!
