Let me start by saying this lock is an absolute UNIT. The first time I hefted the Kryptonite Evolution 1012 out of its packaging, my arms actually dipped - this thing weighs as much as a small dog! But that weight translates to serious peace of mind when locking up my prized e-bike.
The 10mm hardened steel links feel indestructible in your hands. I've tried giving it a few whacks with a hammer (for science!), and there's not even a dent. The six-sided chain design makes bolt cutters practically useless against it - you'd need an angle grinder and about 5 minutes of uninterrupted time to get through this beast.
What really impressed me was the thoughtful design touches: The rubber coating prevents scratches on my bike's frame (a lifesaver for expensive paint jobs), and the sliding dust cover over the keyhole has already saved me from several rainy-day jamming incidents. That little illuminated key? Genius for late-night parking situations.
Now for the reality check: At nearly 7 pounds, this isn't something you'll want to carry on every ride. I've taken to wearing it bandolier-style across my chest, which works but definitely gets old after 10+ miles. For quick coffee stops it's perfect, but for longer touring I sometimes opt for a lighter secondary lock.
The length (about 4 feet) is Goldilocks-perfect - enough to secure two bikes or wrap around thick poles, but not so long that it becomes unwieldy. I regularly use mine to lock both my e-bike and my partner's road bike together at trailheads.
Kryptonite's theft protection program adds nice peace of mind, though thankfully I haven't had to test it yet. After six months of daily use in all weather conditions, the mechanism still turns smoothly every time - no rust or stiffness despite being exposed to coastal salt air.
Bottom line: If security is your top priority and you don't mind the weight, this is hands-down one of the best chain locks money can buy. Just be prepared for some serious arm workouts!
