Just got my hands on the TYT TH-UV88, and I gotta say, it's a mixed bag of surprises and frustrations. Here's my honest take after using it for a few weeks.
The Good Stuff:
• The build quality feels way better than Baofeng radios - like they actually used decent plastic instead of recycled soda bottles.
• That display? Chef's kiss! White backlight with bold black text makes it super readable, even in sunlight. No more squinting like with my old UV-5R.
• Sound quality is surprisingly crisp - not that tinny garbage you get from cheap radios. Volume goes from whisper to concert real quick though (watch those eardrums!).
• Programming with CHIRP works (mostly), though some settings are locked away like government secrets.
The Annoying Bits:
• The menu system feels like solving a Rubik's cube blindfolded. Why is changing from channel name to frequency such an ordeal?
• That volume knob turns if a butterfly farts nearby. I've accidentally muted myself more times than I can count.
• The firmware has more quirks than my eccentric aunt. Random channel switching? Check. Mysterious menu options that do nothing? Double check.
• Battery life could be better - feels like I'm charging it every other day with moderate use.
Final Verdict:
For $30-$40, it's honestly not bad if you can tolerate its personality flaws. Better than Baofeng in many ways, but still very much a 'you get what you pay for' situation. Would I buy again? Maybe... if they fix some of these quirks in an update.
