I recently put the Benchmark Abrasives 4 1/2 Inch Zirconia Discs to the test on a rusty metal gate restoration project, and wow – these discs are absolute beasts! The zirconia grains sliced through decades of rust and old paint like butter, leaving a surprisingly smooth surface. What impressed me most was how they handled both heavy material removal AND fine blending without switching tools.
The discs held up remarkably well during extended use with my angle grinder. Unlike cheaper options that disintegrate quickly, I only went through 3 discs for the entire gate project. They created minimal dust compared to standard sanding discs, and didn't load up even when working on stubborn areas with multiple paint layers.
Where these really shine is weld cleanup. I used them to blend some ugly MIG welds on a steel workbench, and they produced results nearly as clean as much more expensive specialty discs. The fiber backing provides just enough flexibility for contour work without being flimsy.
The only minor drawback is they can be brittle if you apply too much side pressure – learned that the hard way when one shattered after an awkward angle. But used properly with a backing pad (as instructed), they're incredibly durable. At about $1 per disc in the 25-pack, they offer fantastic value compared to hardware store prices.
After testing them on everything from rusty car parts to fresh plasma cut edges, I'm convinced these are now my go-to grinding discs for serious metalwork. They've earned a permanent spot in my workshop arsenal!
