






Okay, so I've been using Ethan Sawyer's methods for 3 years as a college consultant. At first I was skeptical - do I really need this book when I've attended his workshops? But wow, the structured framework for extracting personal stories is GOLD.
The sample essays with line-by-line commentary are super helpful. My students always go 'whoa I didn't realize I had these stories in me' during the brainstorming exercises. Though heads up - some sample essays feel too short (under 650 words).
Biggest win? Saw a stressed senior actually ENJOY writing his Common App essay after using this. The 'values to career goals' mapping exercises work magic for anxious kids. But advanced writers might find it too basic - my AP Lit students wanted more Ivy League-level examples.
Wishlist: A teacher's edition with reproducible worksheets would make classroom use easier. Still, 4.5/5 stars - it's become my go-to recommendation for first-time essay writers!
