As a huge fan of the original video game, I was skeptical about how well it would translate to a board game. But after several playthroughs, I'm blown away by how faithful and fun this adaptation is.
The deckbuilding mechanics feel incredibly satisfying when played physically. There's something magical about holding those 650+ cards in your hands and carefully crafting your strategy. The card rewards system is downright addictive - every upgrade feels earned.
What surprised me most was how well the cooperative elements work. Planning combos with friends creates moments of genuine excitement that you just don't get playing solo. Our first game ran long (about 2 hours for Act 1), but the time flew by because we were constantly engaged.
The components are mostly high quality, though I agree with other reviewers that some plastic pieces could be sturdier. Setup is surprisingly quick thanks to the excellent insert organizer - a godsend for game night.
While playable solo, this truly shines as a 2-3 player experience. Four players can get slow, but the strategic depth keeps everyone invested. Whether you're a veteran of the digital version or completely new to Slay the Spire, this board game delivers an unforgettable cooperative adventure.
