Okay, so I finally caved and bought the 4K version of Full Metal Jacket. Do I regret it? Absolutely not. This movie hits like a sledgehammer—every. single. time.
The first half? Pure nightmare fuel. R. Lee Ermey’s drill sergeant is iconic for a reason. The way he breaks those recruits down is equal parts hilarious and horrifying. And Vincent D’Onofrio’s performance? Chilling. That bathroom scene still gives me goosebumps.
Then it flips to Vietnam, and suddenly it’s all chaos and surrealism. The pacing feels disjointed at first, but that’s the point—war doesn’t have a neat three-act structure. Kubrick doesn’t let you off easy.
The 4K transfer is crisp, especially in the boot camp scenes. The shadows in Vietnam get a bit grainy, but honestly, it adds to the grime of war. Extras are solid—Modine’s commentary is worth a listen.
Downside? My cat bolted when the yelling started. Pro tip: Warn your pets (and your soul) before hitting play.
