After using the Broadlink RM Mini3 for a month, I'm convinced this little black bean is the most cost-effective way to upgrade your 'dumb' IR devices to smart home status. The setup had me sweating bullets though - more on that later.
The good: This thing has incredible IR range. I have it tucked behind my TV cabinet, yet it controls my ancient AC unit across the room through reflected signals. The companion app (e-Control) eventually became intuitive, letting me create custom macros like 'Movie Night' that dims lights and powers on my entire entertainment system.
The bad: Initial setup is needlessly complicated. Like other reviewers, I spent 30 minutes figuring out you MUST connect directly to the device's WiFi first before it'll talk to your home network. The included 'manual' might as well be hieroglyphics. Pro tip: Use a paperclip to reset - your fingers will thank you.
Real-world use case: I've programmed it to turn on my coffee maker at 6:30 AM by simulating the physical button press. Game changer! But be warned - Alexa integration through the IHC app feels like beta software. My 'volume up' command sometimes changes my AC temperature instead. Cue confused houseguests when the room gets colder instead of louder.
For $20, you're getting impressive technology with some rough edges. If you're willing to tinker, this can replace a dozen remotes while adding smart features to appliances that predate smartphones. Just don't expect plug-and-play simplicity - bring patience and maybe a conversion chart for when it randomly switches to Celsius.
