Okay, let's talk about EVEREST in 4K. First off - WOW. The visuals are absolutely insane. Like, 'pause-the-movie-to-stare-at-your-TV' insane. That opening shot of the Himalayas? My living room suddenly felt very small.
The cast is stacked - Jason Clarke and Jake Gyllenhaal completely disappear into their roles. There's this one scene where Clarke's character is radioing his pregnant wife from the death zone that wrecked me emotionally. Bring tissues, people.
Now about that 4K transfer... Holy resolution! You can literally see individual snowflakes in the blizzard scenes. The HDR makes the ice walls glow in this eerie blue that no standard Blu-ray could capture. My OLED TV was basically having a religious experience.
Sound design deserves its own paragraph. When that avalanche hits? My subwoofer tried to leave my apartment. The Atmos mix makes you feel like you're IN the storm - wind whipping all around, voices coming from different heights like they're actually on the mountain.
Controversy alert: Yeah, Krakauer hates it. But as someone who read 'Into Thin Air' three times, I think the film captures the terrifying randomness of high-altitude disasters better than any documentary could.
Pro tip: Watch this at night with all lights off. Preferably while wrapped in blankets because you WILL feel cold just watching it.
