Okay, so I just finished Mike Klaassen's 'Fiction-Writing Modes' and wow - why didn't someone explain writing like this before?
The way he breaks down storytelling into 11 specific modes is genius. No more vague 'show don't tell' nonsense - finally concrete tools to fix my messy drafts!
What I love most is how practical it is. When my action scenes feel flat, I can check the 'activity' modes. When my character's thoughts drag, boom - 'interiority' section to the rescue.
It's not about changing your style (thank goodness), but understanding the building blocks. Like having a writer's toolkit instead of just hoping inspiration strikes.
Fair warning - the organization could be better. Some chapters feel repetitive, and I had to flip around a bit. But the content? Pure gold for any serious fiction writer.
Already seeing improvements in my WIP after applying just a few of these concepts. Definitely keeping this on my desk as a reference!
