Okay, so I just finished 'Ten Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now' and wow... my mind is blown. As someone who used to refresh Instagram every 5 minutes, this book hit me like a ton of bricks.
The author Jaron Lanier isn't just some random hater - he's a Silicon Valley insider who helped BUILD these platforms. When he says social media is designed to mess with our heads, I believe him. The part about how algorithms manipulate our emotions? Chilling.
What really got me was Argument #3: 'Social media is making you into an asshole.' Ouch. But true! I've definitely posted stuff online I'd never say in person. The anonymity turns us into worse versions of ourselves.
The BUMMER acronym (which stands for Behaviors of Users Modified, and Made into an Empire for Rent) appears constantly - like literally every other page. At first it annoyed me, but by the end I was muttering 'BUMMER' every time I caught myself mindlessly scrolling.
After finishing the last chapter, I actually did it - deleted Facebook and Instagram cold turkey. Day 3 now and... it's weirdly liberating? My screen time is down 60% and I'm having actual conversations again.
Fair warning though - the book gets pretty technical in spots with philosophy jargon that went over my head. And Lanier definitely has some political opinions that might rub people the wrong way.
But overall? 10/10 would recommend to anyone who's ever felt that nagging sense something's 'off' about social media but couldn't put their finger on why.
