Just finished reading 'The Boyfriend' by Freida McFadden, and wow—this book messed with my head in the best way possible. I thought I had it all figured out by chapter 10, but McFadden pulled the rug out from under me—twice.
The way the story alternates between Sydney's awkward dating disasters and Tom's dark past had me flipping pages like a maniac. That scene where Sydney finds the ant farm? I actually gasped out loud on my commute—got some weird looks from fellow subway riders.
What surprised me most was how much I related to Sydney's inner monologue. Her self-deprecating humor when describing terrible dates felt like listening to my own thoughts after a bad Tinder experience. Though hopefully none of my dates turn out to be secret psychopaths...
The twist with Daisy still being alive? Didn't see that coming AT ALL. I was so convinced Randy was the villain—McFadden played me like a fiddle. And that ending where Tom chooses Daisy anyway? Infuriating but somehow perfect for his messed-up character.
My only complaint? Kevin's subplot felt unnecessary. Dude was just taking up space until his dramatic exit. But that's a minor quibble in what's otherwise a perfectly paced thriller that had me reading under the covers with a flashlight like I was 12 again.
